GGBC celebrates 2020 - 15th year at Cardinal O'Hara

North Tonawanda, NY – Gold Glove Baseball Camp celebrated its fifteenth year with its annual youth camp at Cardinal O’Hara High School the second week of July.

“We really had a great week to celebrate our 15th anniversary,” said veteran Camp Director Don Fontana. “Doug (Buczak – Director of Admissions) always does a great job of making us feel welcome and it was great to see (returning Athletic Director) Angelo (Sciandra) and the rest of the O’Hara staff who do such a great job for us every July.”  Fontana was joined by returning veteran coaches Jim Fort and Mike Matz, as long-time camp staff staples Angelo Sciandra Jr, and Robert Principe requested time off this summer. It was definately a set-back not having Ang and Robert with us,” commented Fontana. “Ang needed some family time and Robert had a very demanding internship in Erie, PA that prevented him from assuming his usual responsibilities as Head Junior Camp Counselor.”

The absence of Principe and Sciandra led to increased responsibility for the current staff. “Coach Matz and I collaborated down in AAA and camp veteran Fulton Fontana put forth a memorial effort filling in for Robert as Head Junior Camp Counselor.”  The camp also welcomed two current Cardinal O’Hara players to the staff. “It was great to have Frank Chimento and Mateo Curtis join us. Having increased involvement from current O’Hara baseball players and coaches has been a goal in recent years and I’m glad that, with Doug’s help, it happened this year.”

As the camp wrapped up, Fontana reflected on the camp’s 15 years at Cardinal O’Hara, “It’s amazing how quickly time has gone by. I remember our first year with eight campers! I’m grateful to Angelo (Sciandra Sr. – Athletic Director) for recognizing the camp’s potential and saying “Yes” and for all the campers and staff that have been a part of the camp all these years. A special thank you to Coach Matz for his incredible dedication, we wouldn’t be here without him and the continued support of Cardinal O’Hara Administration and Staff, along with Dick’s Sporting Goods.
